Decks are predominantly made of wood—boards, rails, posts and all. But within the last year, we have started to use a very new option: the paver deck.
Paver deck systems work with any deck frame, either existing or newly built. The idea is that instead of wood boards for the surface, concrete paver material is shaped in the form of boards and used instead. Truth be told, it can be quite difficult to tell the difference.
The installation process involves laying down a black honey comb-looking silica decking base on top of a deck frame, followed by either gator mat or fabric liner which acts as a cushion to prevent cracking. The pavers are laid over top as the final layer. The paver can be any style, but we like using varieties molded to look like aged oak wood.
The end result is stunning. It looks just like a reclaimed wood deck surface, or if you use another style of pavers, just like a patio surface. In addition to the great aesthetics, this kind of deck will be more durable in the long run over a wood surface. The pavers are a more durable material, and can be sealed like wood to prevent staining. Similar to other decking materials, it is not perfect. Pavers will chip or crack with use over a long time period. However, a paver deck will require less maintenance than wood to keep it looking nice.
This new system opens possibilities for homeowners looking for more durable choices, or just unique looks for their backyard deck. Use the pavers on a deck alone, or pair it with a matching patio. Whichever you choose, the quality of the deck shouldn’t change with its method or materials! The Eagleson Landscape Co. team has built several of these decks with the same level of quality as any other project. We have found our clients love this new option, and are happy to offer it in our hardscape repertoire.
