Plant of the Week – English Lavender

Time to delve into some gardening inspiration! I had the pleasure of working on an English Garden this week. What a surprise to find such an extensive and fun landscape in someones backyard here in Indiana! While working on crisping up, straightening out and bringing symmetry back to the garden, it was impossible to miss the abundance of individual plants species on display. Each plant was individually labeled, making it simple to identify everything they had. I encourage all of you to get into labeling yourselves! I promise you will thank me if you do, even the plant experts forget what we put in our garden!  As I read through their garden one plant stuck in my mind, Lavandula angustifolia ‘Munstead’ or the English Lavender! The perfect perennial for this weeks Plant of the Week!

Full disclosure, English Lavender is not from England. It gets its name because of how well it grows in the English climate and thankfully it also grows well here in Indiana! English lavender has beautiful lavender blue colored flowers which bloom throughout the summer. A showy plant, but its true draw is its powerful perfume-like fragrance. Wonderful to plant in masses, but can be used in almost any design situation. It’s green-gray foliage is different from other plants and provides added interest to an already stunning species. It is also a perfect plant to bring inside your home, as a cutting, to enjoy its immense aroma. Maintenance for this plant is not serious, but our extreme climates can make life challenging for this plant. Try to plant it where it will get good air flow and make sure to mulch it every year to insulate it.English Lavender Landscape
