Plant of the Week – Obedient Plant

Obedient PlantNature is a wonderful and obedient phenomenon. Every living thing, including you and me, is rigidly fixed to a set of laws written by mother nature herself. From physics, to biology, to the chemistry of life everything we do is dictated by what these laws say is possible. Mother Natures book, Life, is a wonderful read. I highly recommend you experience it to the fullest!! This weeks Plant of the Week is all about obedience, in fact its in the name! Let’s talk about Physostegia virginiana or the Obedient Plant.

Obedient Plant is a wonderful perennial that enjoys full sun and moist to wet soils.  It gets beautiful pink or white blooms that stand tall and proud(up to four feet high) and truly define elegance in my humble opinion.  These tall proud stems can flop however(HOW DISOBEDIENT, GASP!!) but this does not take away from the sublime splendor of this plant. You can also stake taller plants, if flopping stems keep you up at night. Now, how is this plant obedient? Well, it is commonly called the obedient plant because if you push on an individual flower it will temporarily stick in the position you put it in, pretty neat!Obedient Plant Flower

Having only medium maintenance needs, sporting stunning flowers and attracting hummingbirds, why not give the Obedient Plant a shot. Read more about why this is a great perennial for you here.
