Plant of the Week – Using New Guinea Impatiens in Your Landscaping

Landscapers have been enjoying some unseasonably warm weather all of November and to start of December, but now Karma has turned its ugly head on our landscaping. I hope you are all staying warm this cloudy cold week! Decembers weather is turning a bit sour and the sun hiding away, so I want to talk about a plant that is sure to brighten up any shaded or part sun landscaping! This weeks Plant of the Week is sure to impress and have you rushing to your local nursery next year for some much needed color in your garden beds! Let’s talk about New Guinea Impatiens and how you can use them around your home.

Why Use New Guinea Impatiens in Your Landscaping?

An abundant selection of colors to create a beautiful display in your yard and low maintenance needs! New Guinea Impatiens are perfect when your yard has just too much sun for “regular” Impatiens. The rainbow sized selection of colors makes using them not only fun, but easy. Simply find your favorite color, plant in your favorite spot and VIOLA you have created art! Care for this plant like you would anything else, water regularly during the hottest months…and honestly that’s about it. You will love looking out your window at the color bonanza happening around your home.

Where to Use New Guinea Impatiens in Your Landscaping?

Provide your New Guinea Impatiens with either shade or part sun, morning sunshine and afternoon shade would be perfect. You will want to plant this in a spot that has moist soil, or remember to water it regularly. Fertilizer would help to increase the productivity of this plant as well, but is NOT absolutely necessary. The absolute best utilization of this plant is in mass plantings. Now, whether that is in a pot, window box or in your landscape is up to you! After only a few weeks you will get a carpet of everlasting summer color. I love to use these in perennial boarders and pots mostly, but have used them to draw the eye to a neighborhood entrance or along a walkway to a front door. Plant this about 10 inches away from bed edges to keep it from spilling out of your bed space!
