Plant of the Week – Crocus

Brrr!  Winter has started its shift here in Indiana!  I hope everyone had a relaxing and fun holiday season, I know we did here at Eagleson Landscape Co!  Lots of family, fires and reminiscing on a VERY fast 2014.  Though the weather has turned sour landscaping did not leave my thoughts!  This past week I was warming up my car, shivering in the driver seat, when I started thinking about spring.  I sat and thought to myself, what is the first flower I get to look forward to popping up through the soil in 2015?  The plants began streaming into my mind, but one stood out, the crocus.

Crocus in the Snow

The crocus is a small, dainty, early blooming flower that reminds us that spring will come soon.  Blooming in February and early March their pink, yellow, blue and purple blooms provide color against the rather bleak winter landscape in Indiana.  Even during the coldest days this little warrior pushes up through the snow to show off its beautiful flowers.  A great bonus is that the crocus requires minimal maintenance and will spread on its own providing more added color each year.  These can also be planted in your lawn to bloom, how cool!  Crocus bulbs should be planted in the fall, generally in September or October, so write yourself a note and be prepared next fall!
