Project Highlight: An Expansive Outdoor Living Design

Our clients in Carmel had big plans for their landscape and outdoor living space. They wanted a functional and beautiful place to enjoy the summer and entertain a lot of people. Revamping their front and backyard took many phases: remodeling their pool and deck area, expanding a koi pond, and completely redoing their landscaping. We were brought on at first as a subcontractor to help with the pool build, but over time as they kept adding to their project, our Eagleson Landscape Team became their main partner in helping them achieve their goals.

Our clients wanted to expand their pool deck area and create an outdoor living room. We worked in tandem with Centennial Construction, their main contractor at the time, to remodel the deck. Our clients chose white travertine, a durable, beautiful natural stone that brings a more high-end look than concrete pavers.

Travertine was also the perfect option for building their outdoor living room. Centennial built a free-standing roof to which we added the fireplace and pillar footers. The space acts as a small living room, complete with couches and a TV.

Our client has a koi pond next to the front entrance of his home. However, the pond had become too small for his beloved fish, so we came in and rebuilt it, expanding its size and of course adding a lovely waterfall. We redesigned the area so the pond would be easily accessible from their entryway path. Most of the material from the old pond was reused, but we added new limestone pieces and included smaller rocks for a more natural look.

The pool area received additional water details through fountains. We installed a bubbling pink stone version, and a completely custom water feature we built out of recycled granite countertops.

For the softscape, we worked directly with our clients to choose low maintenance plantings that provided a great deal of color during summer. We planted knockout roses, ornamental grasses and buckthorn for texture; potted tropical palms and spindle palms for a beach feel around the pool area; evergreens to create focal points, and jet-eyed viburnum and dwarf lilac for fragrance and color. Because their house was so close to their neighbors, we also planted a hedgerow of evergreens to create privacy, so when they were out in their pool they weren’t looking into the neighbor’s garage. To keep the pool easier to clean, we chose rocks instead of mulch for the beds, which would not blow into the pool.

Our clients now have both a beautiful outdoor living area and lovely landscaping to complement it. We are currently in the planning stages for another phase which involves further redesigning of the front yard landscaping. Questions about this project?
